Proverbs 18:22, “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.”

Can a woman be an ideal wife and mother?

Frederick Warren

God created marriage because he saw a need. When a man and woman place their union in the hands of God they can trust He will care for their mutual good.

So, what makes a Godly wife beautiful in God’s eyes. We can find the answer in Proverbs 31.

Verse 10 asks, “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies?”

The ideal woman is virtuous,  of noble character. Remember when people used to say, ‘character counts’.

Verse. 11, “The heart of her husband doeth safely trust in her,”

Her husband has full confidence in her. She will model to her children honor towards her husband, inner way she will give him strength and confidence. As a stabilizing influence in the home, the woman can encourage her husband by demonstrating how important he is to the family.

Verses 12-15, “She will do him good and not evil [not harm] all the days of her life. She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar, She riseth also while it is still dark, and provides food for her family.”

My Grandmother often quoted, ‘man works from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done.’ As a woman we seek what is best for our family, by taking care of our home and their physical needs.

Verses 16-19, “She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. she sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand she holds the distaff [staff that holds the wool] and grasps the spindle with her fingers.”

The woman is well aware of her home’s economical needs and seeks to make the best of the funds used to care for the family and for the home. This can span from growing her family’s food, to preparing their meals, to caring for the children and to potentially supplementing the household income when necessary.

Verse 20, “She stretcheh out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.” One song I loved as a youth was, ‘Others, Lord, yes Others’.

If we’re to have the heart of Christ that should be our song. The home is the best place for a woman to demonstrate this mindset, ‘marriage is no place for selfishness’.

Verse.25, “She is clothed with strength and dignity.”

As a woman we tend to take great care of others and sometimes not so good of ourselves. To be a wise woman in God’s eyes, we must take the best care of ourselves for our families. That includes good healthy habits, appropriate rest, exercise and good mental health. Also, take good care of your appearance – it is a boost for you and for your family.

verse 25 also says, “She can laugh at the days to come.”

It is important to be cheerful and to have a good sense of humor and to have a good sense of proportion when life events happen. Faith in God, no matter what, will strengthen a woman to weather whatever life may have to offer. 8. The ideal woman is wise

A literally translation of verse 26 is “She talks shrewd-sense and offers kindly counsel” – or, “common sense.” Being a good listener is helpful to all people. Being able to listen and to share your life’s experiences and most importantly your faith, you can be helpful to other, perhaps younger women, to also fulfill another Godly aspect of mentoring.

verse 26 can be accurately translated, “The law of kindness is on her tongue.”

Kindness cannot be over-rated. We never know what another has gone through in their life or in that day alone. To demonstrate God’s love to others, especially to our husband and family, it is most important to be kind.

The most important trait is demonstrated in the last verse. A woman after God’s own heart is shared in verse 30 which literally reads,

“A woman who reveres the Lord will be praised.”

Demonstrating to our family our deep love for God and reverence for him, we can shine as a light for them which will lift their hearts to wish to follow through. You can be the best wife and mother to your family by strengthening your reverence and faith in God – what better way to be a helpmate and to better train your children than by example.
