I am fascinated with natural dyes - LOVE the soft pink that avocados brings to fabrics - check it out!

Pretty in Pink

A while back, I shared some photos of some lovely pink flowers, pink teacup and pink lace and fabric. I had just recently dyed the fabric and was thrilled with the soft, dusky pink. It is fun to create this beautiful pink shade by using a natural dye, avocado.

Now, here’s the

How To

I promised.

Skin and Pit from One Avocado
(chop pit with knife – easiest when fresh)

  • In a large stainless steel bring about 12 cups of water to boil – add skins and pit pieces. Boil for about 20 minutes. Add more water to bring to twelve cups. (You’ll be limited to the amount of fabric – don’t over-crowd)
  • Remove all skin and pit pieces from water and add clean lace, doily and cotton towels (natural fibers work best such as silk and cotton) I did a tablecloth – light; cotton kitchen towel; two lace curtains.
  • Bring to a low boil for about 20 minutes. Move the fabric around from time to time with a wooden spoon. You can lift the fabric to see if the color is as deep or light as you wish.

Remove, rinse and hang to dry.

It’s that simple!

I did not use anything else – you’ll find a number of recipes and natural dye ingredients out there. Quite a number require a mordant, which includes a chemical that ‘fixes’ the dye to the fabric.

You can also find a lot of Natural Dye ideas here.
