Dollar Store Challenge

Dollar Store Challenge candle holder

Barbara at The Everyday Home issued a wonderful challenge – to create something from an item from The Dollar Store!

The first challenge includes using a glass candle holder! I’m looking forward to seeing what others created.

I racked my brain for ideas – trying to think of something unique and practical.  While at Goodwill earlier this month I found two small silver trays – one just a wee bit smaller than the other.

Then a plan began to formulate! I had The two trays and the candleholder to start. Now, I just needed a few more items to complete it. I had a base to a hurricane lantern of which the glass broke – perfect base. I found an appropriate sized plate to put on the base. It is just a bit larger than the largest tray and I don’t mind painting it.

The part to add between the two trays was a little more difficult. I wanted the look to be graduated from the bottom to the top. I tested out a few items until I put  a shot glass underneath the smallest silver tray . Voila! Just right!

Now, I decided to paint everything to compliment the aged look to the silver trays. I first painted all the pieces black. Then applied looking glass paint. There’s some variation in color to the trays – the patina. So I added some antique gold and verdigrees green here and there. Not too much. Just a hint.

Once dried, I glued each piece together with Weld-Bond. Love that stuff!

The tower is complete. Initially I was going to glue them all together, but I now love the versatility of stacking these or standing them beside each other – or alone!

I really enjoyed this project and can see myself using these stands for decorating and for entertaining!

  14. Kathy-
Love that it can be taken apart. That gives it so much more flexibility in use. My daughter needs this as she is the queen of fruit and nowhere to put it all.
