We live in the country, I have a wonderful family and a beautiful home. The life I live has a wonderful rhythm – the pace of a small country town where your neighbors and local business owners are your friends.

Finding a Dream Home

Everyone has their ideal of what a dream home is to them. One of the things I love about our home is that it is an older home. In our little town there are several, historic homes that are exquisite. Several are the typical Antebellum style, some are NeoClassical.

My Beautiful View

As many of you know, if you’ve read A Delightsome Life over the years, I have the joy of seeing one of the most beautiful homes in our little town every day, from my kitchen window.

I’ve shared with you from time to time pictures of the exterior of this lovely home – the architecture is just breathtaking.

The Dream Home’s New Owner

I had the opportunity to meet the charming new owner to the Burwell house along with her lovely family. She held an Open House inviting neighbors and family to meet and to see her house.

Exquisite Detail

This home, built in 1906 by William H. Burwell,  a former representative of Georgia and Sparta Mayor, is over 6000 square feet.  The detail in the home has been well kept with the original fireplaces and some lighting still in place. It is reported that Mr. Burwell went bankrupt in the process.I could just imagine the lifestyle of the first homeowner.

The home was then purchased by ‘a man of great means, W. A. Sands from Columbus, Ohio, who finished the home as a hunting lodge’. Mr. Sands also purchased 10,000 acres in Hancock County in the hopes that the family would farm the land. Mr. Sands daughter, Helena later married Harry Goss; the couple lived in the home. Henena Goss lived in the home until 1987 and her grandson Dan Goss lived there for a brief time in the ’70’s and the family then sold the home in the late 1980’s. (information provided by Dan Goss)

Having an older home in this little town, it does my heart good when empty houses become homes. These lovely, old and some historic, homes need someone to love them and to care for them. My new neighbor brought a few of her things to decorate the rooms…I loved seeing glimpses of her style…

This beautiful house that I view each day had been empty for quite a while, the owner living elsewhere. Finally, the house came on the market and there was steady interest. This home has some exterior and interior needs – it’s a big undertaking and needs someone who could see themselves there for years to come. My new neighbor shared with us her vision of how each room will be used. She is delighted to open her home to share, to learn of its history and to some day fill the rooms with the sounds and charm of a home filled with a happy family. I was so delighted for her and the opportunity to share in her joy of her new dream home.  I wish her well.
