I changed the whole look of our living room...an easy way to update a room's look is by making slipcovers for the furniture! It was inevitable. Dearest looked at me as I was preparing to slipcover this chair and said, ‘Are you going to slipcover or paint everything in this room?’ Well….nearly! I have one more chair to slipcover then the living room transformation will be complete!

The Chair Before

chair – before

We’ve had this chair for many, many years. We purchased this chair, the couch (now slipcovered) and the recliner – next in line – when we purchased our previous house in 1996! These pieces of furniture are well made and fit the previous English Cottage decor style.

New Decor Style…New Look

slipcovered chair-1The transformation began with painting the walls gray. The complimentary colors are blues, beiges and browns. This chair needed a whole new look.

slipcovered chair-8I selected a number if different fabrics for all of the sewing projects for this room. I loved the soft color and the design on this fabric.

First Step

slipcovered chair-2I began by cutting out a piece for the back and for the front – with the front having a couple extra inches for tucking into the seat cushion. I pinned the fabric  – reverse side out – following along the curves of the chair’s back. I sewed that line together. I then measured out the seat attaching the fabric to the front. I allowed for enough fabric to fall along the sides.

Attaching the sides

slipcovered chair-3I cut around the arm both at the top and at the seat giving enough fabric to turn under and for a seam. I sewed a seam for each flap then added ribbon to tie the sides together. For the arm, I cut out a strip long enough to have a seam at the front and to fit underneath the front/back cover. I stapled the fabric to the underside of the chair’s arms.

Short Skirt

slipcovered chair-6I decided to give the slipcover a short skirt to allow the beautifully carved legs to show.

The finished Slipcover

slipcovered chair-4The slipcover complements well with the new colors on the walls and the other recovered and painted pieces of furniture. The projects I’ve completed are: painting the walls, recovering chair cushion, re-upholstering chair, painting bench, painting table, recovering the ottoman and slipcovered couch. I have a few more projects to then be able to show you the whole room reveal. From English Country to French Country…I’m loving the serene new look.
