Giving a Frame an Aged Silver Finish

I am combining two of my current favorite things – aged silver and chalkboards. While Dearest was at a conference – I went to the local Goodwill – wouldn’t you?! I found this gold framed mirror – I love the style but not so much the gold..I envisioned giving a frame an aged silver finish. I also found two silver trays that I knew just needed a chalkboard finish.

The Products

There’s actually a lot of color in aged silver…I decided to use the Fusion Mineral Paint that transformed my son’s dining table. I used the Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black and the Metallic Silver and Antiquing Gilding Paste.

The Process

I first taped around the mirror with Frog Tape – great stuff! I applied a thin layer of the Coal Black. I allowed that to dry. Some of the gold showed through. I then randomly added the Metallic Silver gilding paste; then the Antiquing Gilding Paste. I then layered here and there more Coal Black, Metallic Silver and Antiquing Gilding paste until I achieved the aged patina I was attempting to emulate.

The Chalkboard

For each of the trays, I applied even layers of chalkboard paint with a total of three layers.

The transformed mirror and the chalkboard tray. The aged silver finish is pretty simiar.

Hanging the Trays

I glued two picture D-Ring Picture Hanging hardware to the back of the trays with E-6000 Industrial Strength glue. The rectangle tray was a bit heavy. I then used ribbon to hang all three in my daughter’s bedroom. I’m not trying to move her out yet, but I already know the look I am working toward in this room…when she moves out next year…

Beautiful Aged Silver and Chalkboard in the Bedroom

This bedroom with have a French flair – I think this beautiful mirror and trays will be just the beginning. My daughter already had the quotes on the wall. I believe they’ll stay and I can find more pretties to hang around the mirror and trays. It’s going to be fun!
