It’s A Mystery – Sweet Banana Bread

taking a break to enjoy a Laura Childs Mystery, tea and sweet Banana Bread.

Last week, I shared with you that I was reading from a French Fairy Tale book.
I was surprised that some of the well known fairy tales had French origin and discovered what was a common aspect in these French stories.

This week, I am engrossed in a mystery. I received an early copy of one of Laura Child’s latest books – this one from the Cackleberry Club Mystery series cleverly titled, ‘Stake and Eggs‘. I was well familiar with her Tea Shop Mysteries and was delighted to delve into this series.

Laura Childs did not disappoint! The same things that I liked about the Tea Shop Mysteries can be found in this book – well-developed characters, intriguing places and plot and those fabulous recipes at the very end! I am loving getting to know the characters, imagine the place and try to figure out as I go along the clues to the mystery. It’s a page-turner!

In Laura Childs’ books, I feel that if I were to travel to these places I would find these marvelous people and places. They are so well written.

While I read, I am enjoying a slice of banana bread – when you have extra, over-ripe bananas what do you do?…

Banana Bread

Ingredients

  • 3 very ripe bananas
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • pecans or walnuts - 1 cup if desired

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Flour and grease two loaf pans or muffin pans. In the bowl of an electric mixer blend the bananas, vanilla, eggs and sugar with the shortening until light and fluffy. In a separate bowl combine the dry ingredients flour, baking soda and salt. Gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just blended. If you wish to add nuts - add with dry ingredients. Pour the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 1 hour - loaf pan and muffin pan about 30 minutes until the bread is beautifully browned and springs back when touched in the middle.

Also I am using one of my newest teacups. I found this Delightsome teacup at book in an antique store at a bargain price of $1. The sales person was skeptical at the price – but, realized it was because it was a mismatch. To my delight! It is a wonderful English transfer ware piece. This new teacups goes very well with my other red transfer ware dishes.

I attended a charity banquet last week and my husband ‘won’ the flower arrangement on the table. It is an interesting arrangement of tropical flowers. The colors are perfect for the fall.

On some old books I placed the vintage lock and keys I purchased at last year’s Country Living Fair in Stone Mountain, Georgia. This year’s fair is this weekend and I am meeting a new friend for a day of Delightsome shopping.

My husband gifted me with a couple of these Celebrate Home candles – this one is Baked Apple Pie – a delicious fragrance.

Now, that I’ve read one of Laura Childs’ Cackleberry Club Mysteries, I will have to do what I did with the Tea Shop Mysteries and go to the beginning to read of the development of these characters and their stories – I know I will love them!
