Serene SundayWhen You are Troubled

It is an inevitability in life. You will have troubles. These troubles may come as a result of your own actions or they may be as a result of someone, something inflicting turmoil on you. As Christians, what do we do? We are not immune to the feelings that result from troubles. No one wishes them to come or says, ‘bring it!’ But God…

We Will Have Troubles

Jesus said we’d have troubles simply by identifying ourselves with Him. His followers definitely had troubles, even unto death. But they learned something wonderful – a complete belief and faith in God. They saw the things that happened to Jesus and the miracle of his resurrection. They understood. Their life was not about themselves or what they could gain, but it was about living for God and living for others.

We are Not Alone in our Troubles

In II Corinthians Paul reassures the believers what God promised. In chapter 6 verse 16 he quotes Leviticus 26:12, ‘And I will walk among you and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.’ But, after Christ came, Paul added a nuance  – ‘I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people’. If we have accepted Christ as our Savior, God dwells within us. His Spirit guides, comforts and teaches us. There is an immeasurable sense of peace and joy when you fully comprehend this.

How to Handle Trouble

Romans 12 gives us instruction on how we can handle trouble:

  • v. 9 – Love – the first thing we should do is emulate God – love
  • v. 10 – Demonstrate Kindness – in our flesh we’d strike back – now we act as God would
  • v. 11 – Act Diligently in all your work – this will be your defense when trouble comes
  • v. 12 – Rejoice in Hope, patient in tribulation and pray – know that this is not it – this is not the total of who you are – this tribulation is only for a moment.
  • v. 13 – Be Hospitable – be welcoming and open to others – demonstrating God’s character
  • v. 14 – Do good unto those who persecute you – God demonstrated He loves all – He demonstrated His love to you when you were afar off from Him
  • v. 15 – Demonstrate genuine joy for others and comfort those who need it – when you need encouragement – encourage someone else.
  • v. 16 – In Christ all our hearts and minds are to be knitted with Him – desiring the best for others before ourselves
  • v. 17 – This is a version of turn the other cheek – when someone wrongs you – don’t repay in kind
  • v. 18 – Live like Christ – and be peaceable to all
  • v. 19 – Don’t strike back or try to avenge when you’ve been troubled or wrong – God will take care of that – have compassion and concern for those without Christ – their actions will affect their end
  • v. 20 – Live in an opposite world – if ‘your enemy hungers’ – feed them – as Christ did for you

Overcome Evil With Good

We are definitely to live in an opposite world. The general consensus in this world’s system is to live for yourself, to get all you can. But, in Christ we live for Him and for Others -first. We are to live and to demonstrate God – the God within us – for good. Overcome evil my friends with good.

More Encouragement

“Seeing then that we have a great high priest that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feelings of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:14-15

“Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another’s burdens, ad so fulfill the law of Christ. For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. But let every man prove his own work, and then shall have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For every man shall bear his own burden. Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things. Be not deceived, God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit real life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap if we faint not. As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:1-10
