Reflections of God’s Faithfulness
Each time I see a full moon, I am delighted and enchanted. I find it so beautiful. I love seeing the sunrise and the sunset…and then there’s the rainbows. These daily and seasonal occurrences are evidence of God’s faithfulness to us all…
In Psalm 89 the writer praises God for his mercy and recounts God’s promise to David that through Him his line will bless all and will be established forever. This promise is fulfilled through Jesus Christ.
“And the heavens shall praise thy wonders. O LORD: thy faithfulness also in the congregation of the saints. For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? Who among the sons of the mighty can be liked unto the LORD? God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him” Psalm 89:5 – 7
We measure time and seasons by the sun and by the moon. They rise faithfully. This is a reminder to us that God’s beauty, love and faithfulness are true. Daily we are given the light of the sun to carry us through the day and at night the moon reflects the light of the sun. The moon changes in its phases and a full moon lights nearly as bright as the sun. God promised, God gave light and He will always be faithful.
The Psalmist then asked whether God forgot His promises. Sometimes we too can feel that way. We can have difficulty and look at the many terrible things happening around us and in the world. Has God forgotten? No!
We see things from a different perspective. We see time and moments…God created these things and sees the past, the present and the future…all things do and will work together for the good. Our current circumstance won’t last forever…these moments seem all consuming and big to us, but in the scheme of eternity are but moments that lead to time eternity with God.
We can measure each day by the rising and the setting of the sun. We can see the moon in all its phases and perhaps not reflect that these are reminders to us – no matter what else is going on – of God’s faithfulness.
“Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail. My covenant will I not break nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips. Once have I sworn by my holiness that I will not lie unto David. His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me. It shall be established for ever as the moon and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah” Psalm 89:33 – 37
Just as the sun and the moon are reminders to us of God’s faithfulness, so are they to God himself.
We can rejoice each day as the sun rises and sets as well as the phases of the moon occur – God is and will always be faithful. These reminders of God’s faithfulness can bring to us a sense of wonder and of joy.
