Back to the Basics

Change happens all the time. Especially when things grow and when we learn more about things.

Over the course of time, the church and the church family have seen quite a number of changes. How the message is delivered, what the message is and how believers interact with one another.

In the beginning, Christians gathered to hear and learn about the ‘Good News’. The Good News was that God came in the form of a man who was called Jesus. He came to seek those who were lost and to heal. He came to make that ultimate payment for ALL of the sins of ALL of mankind past, present and future. He came to reconcile mankind to God. He came to deliver, to heal, to bring together and to separate.

At first, the message was taken to the Jews based upon the promises of God written in His word. Then, the joy of salvation was opened to ALL. All who would hear, believe and accept.

Then, the church began to grow and to wonder, ‘how then shall we live?’ Guidelines were given simply founded upon the basis of, “love God and love others”. This is the foundation of the Ten Commandments – our relationship with God and with man.

At times some came into the church to ‘add to’ the requirements that were laid by the Apostles directed by God. They focused more on the outward appearance and behavior. You had to look, act and walk the part – outwardly. But, their hearts weren’t right.

Then, you had to dress, worship and fellowship in just a certain way. Still outwardly. And this is not life. This is not fulfilling and this is not growing deep in your faith.

A lot of worship today seems to go on ‘feeling’. How the words make you feel, how the music makes you feel….and then you go back to life to face the daily tasks and trials.

Is that a deep faith?

Is faith based upon what you wear – dress up or dress down? Personally, I’m not getting the ‘dressed down’ church. But, I can understand that some are just bucking against what was held as a standard many, many years ago.

That standard also reflected in society. Men and women dressed up more when going out in public. Today, it wouldn’t be surprising to see people going shopping in their loungie pants or pj’s.

Do we set the standard or follow it.

back to the basics

I think we all should step back and take a moment of reflection. Where is my heart with God? How do I feel about my life? Am I conscious and repentant when I sin? Do I allow ‘small sins’ in my life. Remember those things God hates –

These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:
A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood,  A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil,  A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.

Proverbs 6:16-19

Do we see things in our life the way God sees them? Do we hold to the basic fundamentals of Christianity?

  1. The inerrancy of God’s word
  2. Literal recount of biblical events
  3. The virgin birth of Christ
  4. The bodily resurrection of Christ
  5. The substitutionary atonement of Christ on the Cross

If you hold to the belief that the Bible is God’s word, then how much time to you spend getting to know what He has to share with you?

If you believe in the events of the Bible, then do you understand your part, your significance in time – to share with others so that they too can understand, learn and believe?

Do you truly believe in all the aspects of the virgin birth of Christ? In all beliefs, there’s nothing to compare? Do you truly believe that God became Man to reconcile mankind to Himself?

Do you believe that Jesus died on the cross, was buried and then bodily rose again and is now eternally in Heaven?

Being a Christian and going to church is so much more than once a week going to meet to hear a sermon/message, to sing songs and then to go about your weekly life?

It’s about family; it’s about fellowship; it’s about growth; it’s about making a difference.

Are you where you want to be in your Christian walk? Have you let the cares of this world drag you down? Have you become so busy and occupied that you don’t give time to prayer?

It’s time. Today, now is the time to get back to basics.

Renew your faith, your commitment and your worship to the God who deserves more than we can possibly give.

How then shall we live?

Daily, moment by moment – with thankfulness and a heart of gratitude toward the one who demonstrated the greatest gift of all – loving us.

How then shall we live?

Honestly before Him. Dedicated to the opportunity to live for Him.

How then shall we live?

For others. Pray that your eyes will be opened to opportunity to be a blessing to another. Create a specific prayer list for those whom you love and know.

How then shall we live?

Daily – dedicated and singularly for Him. Salvation is a gift. Our life is the gift we give in return.
