There are days…when it seems like we’re running from one thing to another. When it seems like there’s little time to enjoy the day, each other and our home…There are days – fun as they may be, to go on vacation; to go to events; to go visit others; to go to work; run, run, run…And the affect of those days are shown in our home. I was thinking this morning…my, goodness! There are only two people here! C’mon! That old saying, ‘clutter begets clutter’ is so very true. Lay one thing down, then another and they just seem to invite everyone to participate. Taking a breath, looking at my list of things to do…I know,
I need to pause and bring back the serenity to our home. I need to bring back the enjoyment of our home. I need to bring back what makes A Delightsome Life – our story – enjoying the serenity of the slower paced life in the country.
Serene Master Bedroom
I do a general pick up and clean up from the back door to the stairway…I want to focus on one room especially – the Master bedroom. This is the room we retreat to at the end of the day. This is our serenity. This is where we begin our days and end our days.
The Master bedroom needs to be a haven.
I want to fully incorporate this quote from William Morris…it resonates deeply with me – especially during this time of my life:
What makes a Master bedroom a serene retreat?
The first, most important thing – a clean, decluttered room. We both lay aside what’s in our pockets, the clothes from the previous day and various items. We both need to put them away – each night. Remember, if we lay it there – it invites friends and then, it’s not so lovely – you just can’t see the room – you see the clutter first.
Fresh bed linens…Rest…a Good Bed
You know Dearest and I are ‘of a certain age now’…our bodies can’t handle things they used to. There was a time we both woke up stiff, stretching, popping and creaking. What’s that all about! There was a point when both Dearest and I didn’t get a good night rest – he his back hurt and me my hips. Pressure points. It was time. We had to get a new mattress…Now if you know me at all, you know I researched my options. We sure do love shopping online now. I wanted to switch to a foam mattress. It had to be one that both of us would find the comfort we needed…
I found this wonderful foam mattress by Loom & Leaf…We’ve had it for over a year and love it! One of the features that was important to the both of us – comfort and coolness. Foam mattresses are known for holding heat. The layering to this mattress allows for the breathability we needed.
Linens – I’ve loved these Perfect Linens sheets – I did a review some time back. They’re wonderful and still looking beautiful and feeling wonderful.
New Headboard – Dearest and I purchased a bedroom set many, many years ago. I loved it…but, had been wanting an upholstered headboard. I drew the design, determined the supplies – and we built it ourselves!
Pillows, Pillows and more Pillows
I know a lot of you are like me…you love pillows – the more the merrier! I love these Euro-styled pillows with these awesome pillowcases from French Laundry Home…I stop by their booth annually at The Country Living Fair each Fall. I can’t wait to go again in just a few months! I purchased Euro-styled pillow inserts from Belk and made these two-sided covers. This makes them versatile – I just flip sides to coordinate with whatever season or style I’m decorating our room in. This French Script pillow came from a vendor at the Country Living Fair!
Lighting and Ambiance
We are blessed with having the original sconces in our bedroom. The chandelier had been taken and replaced with a sad light fixture…Dearest replaced it with this sweet brass light fixture – we found this at an Estate auction. It was in a box – one of those mystery sales! I love it! The crystal lamps by each side of our bed allows us to use them as task lighting so that we can be considerate of one another – if the other is resting. Soft lighting in any room certainly makes for a wonderful, serene atmosphere.
Besides the wonderful light from the sun, or even the moon at times, the wonderful light fixtures in the room…there’s nothing else that can cheer and brighten a room like flowers! If I can – I love to put flower arrangements in every room!
Seating and a Table
When the weather’s cold or we just need to get away for a quiet place to read or talk – these chairs set by our fireplace are perfect. They are perfect for me – since I’m short! They’re perfect for Dearest – he can easily read or nap there – whatever his heart desires. I love taking my tea here from time to time!
In keeping with William Morris’ quote – if I didn’t have any other type of decor – I’d have family photos. The joy of living is family – wherever Dearest is – is home to me. I love the memories these photos evoke…I look forward to more.
My daughter purchased this Essential Oils Diffuser for me some time back. I love experimenting with combinations of oils to bring about a wonderful, welcoming, comforting, energizing or whatever mood I feel we need. For the Master bedroom – oftentimes the mixture includes Lavender – no other fragrance relaxes me more!
We don’t have to have much in here to thoroughly enjoy the serenity of this room. In all of our home we don’t need much. We have each other – and that’s home. Making each room comfortable, enjoyable and serene – that’s my mission.
What do you find to be essential for your Master bedroom? What do you add to make it a serene retreat? I’d love to know!
